Moonstruck by Dannika Dark is book seven in the Crossbreed series. It is not necessary to read other installments to enjoy the current story. As always, I recommend undergoing the complete experience from book one. There is a greater depth to the story that way. Kind of police with a touch of mercenary, Keystone assist the breed world with various tasks that official channels are unable, or unwilling, to manage. In Moonstruck, the bulk of the group is escorting a small group of teenagers to a private school.

What I like:   

As the series gets longer, the stories branch out to include more depth on each member of Keystone. Their evolving ties seem to solidify the desire for penance from their dark pasts. The member's relationships are precarious, but the bonds are slowly evolving.  What began as simple partner pairings in some cases feel like genuine friendships, perhaps even more. With Raven and Christan's relationship on solid ground, the focus is mainly on the storyline conflicts. This fact does not bother me a bit. Urban fantasy can be just as thrilling and enjoyable as a paranormal romance, Dannika Dark is astounding because she does both remarkably well.  

Random Spoilery Thoughts

I go back and forth on whether or not I desire other partnerships to turn into romance.  There are a few couples that I think would be good together, but I really do enjoy these books regardless of the romance. At this point, either way will be just fine for me. And all types of love exist. A family is not always the ones we are born to, and the Keystone members are becoming a wonderful sort of misfit family. I eagerly await more from this team.

REVIEW 

The Crossbreed books can be read independently, but I always advocate reading each book in a series. Nevermore is book six, and many of the storylines gain more depth when you experience them all. I love the Keystone group. They are a diverse family of supernatural beings, all trying to overcome painful pasts. This book veers away from the case per week format while the group spends some long needed vacation time.

Since the introduction of Raven's father Crush a few books back, I have been eager to spend some time with him. Raven has been dealing with a great deal of guilt about how she left things with Crush. This book was Raven's second chance to show Crush how much he means to her. They have some poignant moments, ones that honestly brought me to tears. Having lost both of my parents this past decade, I understand Raven's desire to make things right with Crush. When a sudden event takes away the ability to see those you love every day, it magnifies prior interactions. The desire to make sure they know how you feel can be overwhelming. What Raven discovers is that Crush knows. Nothing changed the love he has for her, or his desire to see her safe and happy. It was cathartic for me.

I enjoyed getting to see some of Christian's history in this book. Difficulties from Christian's past feel authentic to my perception of him. Sufficiently putting his issues to rest might prove difficult, but at least they are in the open.

Raven and Christian come a long way by the end of Nevermore. The start of the book finds them at a crossroads in their relationship. It worried me that by the end a decision would not come to pass. But one did. And I am fully satisfied with what occurred. When Niko and Claude acknowledge seeing past the secret Raven and Christian were trying to keep, it cracked me up. Guess they weren't as sneaky as they thought. Which was, in all actuality, apparent before being stated.

The rest of the gang continue to grow. Niko finally realizes the benefit of coming clean about his current predicament with Cyrus. Shephard bonding with Hunter is another moment of deep emotion for me. The two of them went through so much they deserve some peace and comfort. It is nice everyone has begun to see Keystone as a place of safety for them. The secrets they hold are no longer something they have to shoulder all alone.

Some random, spoilery thoughts:
Lenore is not done with Christian, and I think that could be very bad. I am a little scared about what Houdini is going to do next. We have never seen him truly mad before, and I think he is pretty perturbed with Raven. We have not seen the last of Switch, I hope. With his background issues, Keystone could be a good fit for him. Okay, Kira is a mystery that must be solved. Speculating about her is driving me crazy.

I highly recommend any book written by Dannika Dark, but the Crossbreed series is my favorite. They are good for anyone who enjoys Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance novels. Read them all, you will not be disappointed. Then tell your friends to read them too!

Blackout by Dannika Dark

Blackout is the fifth book in the Crossbreed series by Dannika Dark. I would caution against reading these books as a stand-alone. There are several interconnecting plotlines throughout the series. All of the background information is important in the development of the characters and the bigger narrative. The Crossbreed books center on Raven Black and her adventures with the Keystone group. Raven lives in Cognito where several supernatural beings cohabitate. As a member of Keystone, she does a myriad of different jobs as requested by the breed's Higher Authority.  This group can be called in for a variety of things. In Blackout Keystone is tasked to secure several groups of political officials during a period of anarchy taking place in their city.

The developing plots in the Crossbreed series continue to progress in Blackout. As is typical, some of the resolutions were gratifying, and some broke my heart. Raven and Christian continue to struggle with their feelings. I surmise personal issues need to be resolved for Raven and Christian's relationship to flourish. I also believe turmoil in Raven and Christian's romance is not Houdini's primary goal. I am keen on discovering what his objective is. Shepard and Niko both have demons in their pasts that are quickly catching up to the Keystone team. Although Shepard winds up better off by the end of Blackout, Niko is going to have to eliminate his demons sooner rather than later. The ensemble present in Keystone is a family. They are a bit wary perhaps, but in the end, they always support each other.

In a community that is predominantly lawless, other than dealing with the most heinous of crimes, Keystone struggles to bring justice without giving into the darkness surrounding them. Rather than maintaining the focus on the supernatural elements, this is a tale about humanity.  Facing loss of loved ones, rising above PTSD, dealing with extreme prejudice, fighting addiction, creating healthy relationships in both friendships and love. I feel angry with them and sad, and devastated when the world is crashing down around them, and cautiously optimistic, and happy when things go their way. These books represent a deluge of the emotional spectrum. I feel an immediate kinship with Dannika Dark's characters and gloriously praise every book she has written. I admit I have a particular fondness for the Keystone group in the Crossbreed series. I encourage everyone to reach their own conclusion.
