Diamonds in the Rough by Charmaine Pauls

ABOUT THE BOOK

A DARK MAFIA ROMANCE

Girls like me, we know how to survive.
We each have our own little ways, but we acquire those skills at the same tender age.

If you ask me how many times a person can die, I'll tell you many times. As many times as a man stabs you in the stomach with betrayal and wrings out your heart with lies.

Girls like me, we live.
We don't get a choice.
We step over the cliff and fall.
Eat, sleep, die, and repeat.

* Diamonds in the Rough is Book 2 of the Diamonds are Forever Trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. Diamonds in the Dust (Book 1) must be read to follow the story. Diamonds are Forever (Book 3), which concludes the story, will be released on 15 September 2020.

REVIEW

Diamonds in the Rough is the second story in the Diamonds Are Forever trilogy by Charmaine Pauls. Diamonds in the Rough ensnared me from the beginning. I could not set this early copy I received down. By the end, I was bouncing in my seat.

The men are very dominating, but the leads are not abusive to their women. It may upset readers sensitive to those topics, but I enjoy the depictions. Charmaine Pauls creates the most intriguing dark and sensual characters.

After a tumultuous start, Zoe accepts her place with Maxime. His dominance becomes a passionate craving for her, and the couple begins the semblance of a relationship. When Maxime neglects to inform Zoe of crucial personal issues, Zoe has to determine what compromises she is prepared to make.

Random Spoilery Thoughts: Maxime broke my heart. Zoe struggles, and when she finally reaches some peace with her complex situation, he consistently makes it worse. I believe this will be a harsh lesson for him, especially when those feelings he doesn't think exist smack him in the face. I absolutely cannot wait for the third Diamonds are Forever.

Audiobook Blast - Midnight Prince by K. Loraine

About The Book

Our story begins the same as any ill-fated romance. Two households, two families, two species that should never be together.

These are the recipe for tragic, beautiful love, fated to end in flames.

She is my doom. She is my destiny. Unavoidable, impossible to deny, and painful to ignore.

They call me Bastard Prince, a half-breed unworthy of a true title. But I still have to follow the rules. Serve the Blackthorne vampire bloodline.

A shifter and a vampire are forbidden to be together. The law declares it so. But Briar is mine, and I’ll fight family and constitution to the death in order to keep her.

Midnight Prince is the first of an all new series in the Blackthorne Vampires world. It contains a cliffhanger and can be listened to without listening to The Blood Trilogy, but it's recommended to listen to all three previous audiobooks (Blood Captive, Blood Traitor, Blood Heir) to avoid any minor spoilers.

EXCERPT

“We did not have to, but we have given you the chance to recuse yourself from these barbarians. Have you made your decision, Astradell? Live with us, or die for going against our Antediluvian's scriptures.” Tagus asks in their ancient Zarbizokian language. Astradell tilted her chin up to look at him, her stone-faced expression mocking the men that surround her. She will not back down, she deserves to be happy and knows she has the King's blessing. Shackled as she was, she locks eyes with Tagus and calmly stood her ground.

“I am welcomed on Earth. I will no longer follow the Order of the EYE.” Her tone is strong making Tagus furrow his brow and huff out a breath of disapproval.

“We know you have adoration for one of these barbarians. Do you deny?” He asks with distain.

“I deny nothing. Do what you must.”

The Dilemma by B.A. Paris

ABOUT THE BOOK

A woman's birthday party takes a dark turn in a poignant, heart-stopping new novel from the reigning queen of suspense, NYT and USA Today bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors, The Breakdown, and Bring Me Back.

“A heartbreaking page-turner that will have you up at night reading just one more chapter.” —Catherine Steadman, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water

“The phenomenal B. A. Paris has done it again! I devoured The Dilemma in one sitting—it grabbed me from the very first page and wouldn’t let go until I’d finished. Secrets, guilt, shame and heartbreak—this story has it all in spades.”—Sandie Jones, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Woman

Knowing the truth will destroy her. Keeping it secret will destroy him.

It’s Livia’s 40th birthday, and her husband Adam is throwing her the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding they never had. Everyone she loves will be there, except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But Livia is secretly glad Marnie won’t be there.

Livia has recently uncovered a secret about their daughter which, if revealed, will shake the foundation of their family to its core. She needs to tell Adam, but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together.

Adam, meanwhile, has his own surprise for Livia: he’s arranged for Marnie to secretly fly back for the party. But before Marnie arrives, Adam hears some terrible news. Now he too is faced with a dilemma: Does he share what he's learned with his wife? Is hiding the truth the same as telling a lie? And how far are Adam and Livia willing to go to protect the ones they love—and give each other a last few hours of happiness?

REVIEW

What I liked: Livia and Adam are very relatable. The couple has had their ups and downs that stems from their marriage and children at an early age. The two were genuine when addressing various regrets and the love they have for their family. I empathized with them while hoping for the best. Additionally, when one of the mysteries began to surface, my prediction was way off. I like it when I am mistaken, it means the author is thinking much harder than I am. Which I greatly respect.

What I didn't like: I know how it ends, but I didn't experience the continuous journey. Consequently, accept my opinion as you will. In the last half of the book, I only skimmed. It didn't have anything to do with not enjoying the book exactly, but I could not handle the pending loss. In essence, the suspense was too much for me, at least that type of suspense.

Livia and Adam experience a gripping journey. Just know that experience is very bittersweet.
