Diamonds in the Rough is the second story in the Diamonds Are Forever trilogy by Charmaine Pauls. Diamonds in the Rough ensnared me from the beginning. I could not set this early copy I received down. By the end, I was bouncing in my seat.

The men are very dominating, but the leads are not abusive to their women. It may upset readers sensitive to those topics, but I enjoy the depictions. Charmaine Pauls creates the most intriguing dark and sensual characters. 

After a tumultuous start, Zoe accepts her place with Maxime. His dominance becomes a passionate craving for her, and the couple begins the semblance of a relationship. When Maxime neglects to inform Zoe of crucial personal issues, Zoe has to determine what compromises she is prepared to make. 

Random Spoilery Thoughts: Maxime broke my heart. Zoe struggles, and when she finally reaches some peace with her complex situation, he consistently makes it worse. I believe this will be a harsh lesson for him, especially when those feelings he doesn't think exist smack him in the face. I absolutely cannot wait for the third Diamonds are Forever.

“We did not have to, but we have given you the chance to recuse yourself from these barbarians. Have you made your decision, Astradell? Live with us, or die for going against our Antediluvian's scriptures.” Tagus asks in their ancient Zarbizokian language. Astradell tilted her chin up to look at him, her stone-faced expression mocking the men that surround her. She will not back down, she deserves to be happy and knows she has the King's blessing. What I liked: Livia and Adam are very relatable. The couple has had their ups and downs that stems from their marriage and children at an early age. The two were genuine when addressing various regrets and the love they have for their family. I empathized with them while hoping for the best. Additionally, when one of the mysteries began to surface, my prediction was way off. I like it when I am mistaken, it means the author is thinking much harder than I am. Which I greatly respect.

What I didn't like: I know how it ends, but I didn't experience the continuous journey. Consequently, accept my opinion as you will. In the last half of the book, I only skimmed. It didn't have anything to do with not enjoying the book exactly, but I could not handle the pending loss. In essence, the suspense was too much for me, at least that type of suspense. 

Livia and Adam experience a gripping journey. Just know that experience is very bittersweet.

Flame by Donna Grant places the Dragon Kings of Scotland at the end of a progressively developing war. As good as this news is, we are beginning to gauge the extensive toll it is taken on several principal characters. With the most important battle yet to come, some personal issues need to be properly resolved before the team can present a unified front. 

Cain and Noreen suffer a challenging time during their budding romance. Their tale is tense and gripping. The couple's chemistry is fantastic, and their resolution is completely satisfying. Absolutely, under no circumstances, should you willingly miss this remarkable book. We are in deep guys and boy is there a stunning, informative, and exciting amount of lore addressed here. Many of my theories are this close to being revealed, and it is driving me crazy, in a pleasing way. 

One warning, if the Dark Kings series is unfamiliar, it is probably inadvisable to start here. The couple's story is independent, but the backdrop has advanced over several books. Reading Flame will spoil the larger storyline if one starts at the beginning later, which I highly suggest doing. 

Thank you, Donna Grant, for this brilliant book and amazing series! I am completely satisfied with what Flame delivers us readers and cannot wait for more.
